Observatory Houses - Design Competition

Our proposal aims to build the first and most suggestive observatory fortress in Italy, harmoniously combining new architecture and ruins while retaining and enhancing the valuable space of the Roccascalegna fortress. The public skylounge on the fortress and the private observatory houses in the forest are clearly separated into two areas with a sufficient distance. At skylounge, the tower collapsed in 1940 was restored as an information lounge made of modern light structure, the Aragonese prison tower and the square are renovated to a restaurant and bookshop where the sunset of Majella is seen, the sentinel tower is renovated to the symbolic observatory on the fortress, then the gaze from the medieval fortress aimed at the enemies in the dark is now directed to the stars in the sky. The observatory houses are shaped like a ship to look up at ocean of stars. The only one window towards the sky minimizes contamination of the light to the night sky and guests can watch the full stars from the bedroom higher than trees. A place where guests can feel the past history and the change of the time of flowing now, that is Roccascalegna's observatory fortress.
